چکیده
An overlapping iterative domain decomposition approach for the coupling of the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM) is presented in this paper. In this proposed method, the domain of the original problem is subdivided into a FEM sub-domain and a BEM sub-domain, such that the two sub-domains partially overlap over a common region. The common region is modeled by both methods. A brief discussion on the existing iterative coupling methods and their limitations are given in the first part of this paper. In the second part, the proposed overlapping method is described and the convergence conditions are presented. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method for handling cases where the Neumann boundary conditions are specified on the entire external boundary of the FEM or BEM sub-domains. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. Fundamental solutions to a generalized Helmholtz equation are determined through dependent variable transforms using the material properties and independent variable transforms based on conformal mapping. This allows variable wave speed media to be examined under some fairly broad material property constraints. q 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, a boundary element model of an underwater landslide is developed. Careful gridding and time stepping techniques are demonstrated that produce highly accurate simulation results based on conservation of volume. A sensitivity analysis shows how to optimize simulation accuracy. The general techniques demonstrated herein are applicable to arbitrary moving submerged bodies. q 1999 Else...

In this paper, the conventional boundary integral equation (BIE) formulation for piezoelectric solids is revisited and the related issues are examined. The key relations employed in deriving the piezoelectric BIE, such as the generalized Green's identity (reciprocal work theorem) and integral identities for the piezoelectric fundamental solution, are established rigorously. A weakly singular fo...

Nerve terminals are highly enriched in proteins needed for endocytosis. Although constitutive and ligand-stimulated endocytosis take place in nerve terminals, the primary type is compensatory endocytosis — the process by which a cell retrieves the additional membrane added to cell surface by a regulated secretory event. This process has been extensively characterized using electrophysiological ...

Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is an oxygen-regulated transcriptional activator that plays essential roles in mammalian development, physiology and disease pathogenesis. The HIF-1α subunit is subjected to oxygen-dependent ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation that is mediated by the von Hippel-Lindau protein. Interaction of HIF-1α transactivation domains with coactivators is induced by...
